How to properly sauna? A guide for Babie Doły Cottages guests.

Using a sauna is a wonderful way to relax and improve your health, but to achieve the best results, it's worth following a few proven rules. You have up to two hours of free relaxation, which is the perfect time to perform a full, traditional ritual.

Here's how to get the most out of the sauna, step by step, in complete safety and comfort:

4 steps to perfect sauna relaxation:

  1. Preparation (Warm up before the heat):
    • Before entering the sauna, take a warm shower – this will wash off any cosmetics and prepare your skin.
    • Dry your body thoroughly with a towel. Dry skin sweats much faster and more effectively.
    • Remove any jewelry and watches (metal can become very hot and burn your skin).
  2. Thermal Bath (Time for Finnish Sisu):
    • Enter the sauna and sit or lie down on a towel. Important: no part of your body (not even your feet) should touch the boards directly.
    • It's best to sauna naked (wrapped in a cotton towel). Avoid synthetic swimsuits, which restrict skin breathing and can release harmful substances when exposed to heat.
    • Your first ascent should take 10 to 15 minutes. If it's your first time, sit on a lower bench where the temperature is milder.
  3. Cooling (Body Hardening):
    • After exiting the sauna, take a cool shower. Remember to cool your body towards your heart (start with your feet and hands, slowly working your way up to your chest).
    • You can also go outside the cottage and take a deep breath – the fresh air and breeze from the Bay of Puck will have a wonderful effect!
  4. Relaxation (Catching Your Breath):
    • Once cooled, rest for another 10–15 minutes. Sit on the patio or in the living room of your cottage.
    • Remember to stay hydrated! Drink a glass of mineral water.
    • You can repeat the entire cycle (heating, cooling, resting) 2 or 3 times.

Sauna cheat sheet

✅ What is worth doing? ❌ What to avoid?
Bring at least 2 towels with you (one for drying, one for sitting). Entering the sauna after a heavy meal or drinking alcohol.
Drink plenty of water before and after the session. Bringing cell phones inside (they will overheat).
Lie down so that your entire body warms up evenly (sit for 2 minutes before leaving). Don't force yourself to sit in the sauna – this is meant for relaxation, not breaking records. Spend as much time there as you feel comfortable.

The Finnish spirit of Sisu in Babie Doły – Sauna is more than just warmth

Have you ever wondered why the sauna brings such profound relief? It's worth taking inspiration from the Finns, for whom the sauna is one of the pillars of national identity, inextricably linked to the concept of sisu – inner strength, fortitude, and perseverance. In our sauna, you can also experience this extraordinary Finnish philosophy:

  • A workout for body and mind: Sitting in temperatures reaching 80–100°C is not only physically relaxing but also a test of willpower. It's a quiet acceptance of the heat and finding deep inner peace within it.

  • Regeneration from the daily grind: Just as Finns escape the cold winter to the sauna, you can also unwind from the stress of the week here. The sauna helps heal fatigue and regenerate, giving you energy for the days ahead.

  • It's time for honesty and authenticity: In the sauna, statuses and masks disappear. It's a sterile, quiet environment where you can have a deep conversation with loved ones or simply be silent together without a hint of awkwardness. It's a place where you can simply be yourself.

  • Hardening through contrast: Although we don't offer jumping into an icy ice hole, a quick, cool shower after leaving the sauna – or a cool breeze from the Bay of Puck – will perfectly harden your body, stimulating circulation and giving you a powerful energy boost.
